For our class project on mise en scene, my group of four had to create a station that helped our classmates experience the world of a randomly chosen character. The person we chose was Alexander Smith, an explorer who is curious, brave, and always looking for new adventures. He loves discovering hidden places and learning new things, even if it sometimes gets him into unexpected situations.
Our group’s goals were to make a neat presentation, a soundscape that matched his story, and a model of the places he likes to explore. Alexander Smith spends most of his days scuba diving and exploring the beach, and at night he goes into the jungle to watch wildlife. He wears a white tank top with a brown leather jacket, beige cargo pants, black boots, and a black fedora. He also carries a brown whip for protection. He usually drives a black jeep, but when he travels to other islands or goes diving, he uses his big sailboat.
To show his world, I made a soundscape that followed his daily adventures. It started with the sounds of him exploring and then moved to him driving around in his jeep through the jungle and by the beach. At our station, we had a PowerPoint presentation on the computers that included his character description, looks, setting, mood board, and favorite songs. The last slide had the soundscape that played the sounds of his daily adventures, like the ocean, animals, and footsteps.
Alexander Smith’s image was made to look cool and adventurous. His fedora, whip, and leather jacket remind people of classic explorers and make him seem confident and strong. The two settings he explores, the calm beach during the day and the dark jungle at night, show different sides of his life. The beach feels peaceful and safe, while the jungle feels mysterious and dangerous. Moving between the two places shows that Alexander never stays still because he is always exploring and adapting to new situations.
